This first ever FinnFest on a cruise
ship helps FinnFest USA to use its 2009 festival to mark
the 200th anniversary of Finland's establishment as a Grand
Duchy of the Russian Empire. In 1809, Finland took its first
step to become an independent nation state. In honor of
this anniversary, we will spend a day in Sitka, Alaska,
capital of the Finnish-Russian 19th-century colony.

Note from Finland's Honorary Consul in Alaska May
is generally a very good month for this cruise. It may be cool as the average
temperature in Sitka for May is 53 degrees (high) and 41 degrees (low). In comparison,
June's average temperature is only 5 degrees warmer. The bigger advantage is that
there will probably be fewer ships, tourists and mosquitos. There will also be
